Supported File Types

We handle many common file types (PDF, Email, Word, Spreadsheets, Powerpoint, RMSF and HTML), and you can unpack ZIP, PST, and OST archives and Concordance productions.

This page describes the supported file types for all of Safelink's products, including Lexiti and Expero.

Our general approach to handling files is:

  • All files are scanned for malware and quarantined if appropriate.

  • Our online viewer supports spreadsheets, RSMF files (short messages and chat), video, audio, and any file that can be converted to PDF (most common document formats). If our online viewer does not support a file type, it can still be uploaded and downloaded in its native format.

  • Where possible, we extract and index text and metadata to make your files searchable. If enabled, traditional or AI-backed OCR is also applied to extract text, including handwriting, enabling indexing and further analysis.

  • All files are encrypted at rest.

Here are the specific file types we support:

File Type Extensions Support
Word Documents DOCX, DOC

Word documents are viewable in the online viewer, and are automatically converted to PDF to enable compatibility across all devices. The original version is retained.

Text is extracted and indexed so that Word documents are fully searchable.

Some metadata fields, like modification dates, are extracted and make available on the document properties screen.

Spreadsheets XLSX, XLS, CSV

Spreadsheets are viewable within the online spreadsheet viewer, which supports tabs and display of formulae.

Text is extracted and made searchable.

Email MSG (Outlook), EML (RFC822)

Emails are unpacked, indexed, and converted to PDF, making the body and attachments visible in the online viewer.

Email metadata (eg. to, from, subject, sent date) is extracted, indexed for search, and visible in the Grid View.

Email bodies and metadata are fully searchable. Special handling for emails

Each attachment will be processed separately using the rules for its file type.

Email Archives PST, OST

PST and OST files can be uploaded, and can be expanded using the Unpack action on the toolbar. The unpack action will create a new sub-folder containing the emails, calendar entries, and any other content contained within the archive.

The folder structure from the PST file will  be recreated inside the sub-folder.

Each entry will then be processed separately using the rules for its file type (see handling of Emails above).

ZIP Archives ZIP

ZIP files can be uploaded, and can be expanded using the Unpack action on the toolbar.

The unpack action will create a new sub-folder containing the contents of the zip file. Each unpacked file will be processed separately using the rules for its file type.

Productions DAT, OPT

Concordance-formatted productions from other eDiscovery software can be uploaded and unpacked, using the Unpack action on the toolbar for the DAT file (also known as the "load file").

We would recommend uploading the whole production, first as a ZIP file, and then unpacking the ZIP file to your workspace. This should create a DAT file, possibly an OPT file, and subfolders containing native, PDF or text data. When you use the Unpack action on the DAT file, you will be asked how you wish to handle each column.

Images JPG, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, DCM (Dicom Medical Images such as X-Rays)

Images may be uploaded and are viewable in the online viewer. Multi-page images (such as for TIFF, PNG, and DCM files) are supported.

OCR is performed automatically for uploaded images, and the extracted text is indexed to make the images searchable.

Audio and Video MP4

A player is provided for video and audio files.

Short Messages RSMF

Chat and short message data is supported in RSMF  (Relativity Short Message Format). Media

HTML HTM, HTML

HTML files are converted to PDF internally, and cam be opened in the online viewier.

Other

Files of any other type may be uploaded and downloaded, but may not be visible in the online viewer.

Where files are converted to alternative formats internally, eg. the automatic creation of PDF versions of Word, Excel, and Email files, the original versions are always retained.
